Microstructural analysis of expanded stainless steel 304 cylinders

چکیده

A gas-gun technique to radially expand cylinders of a chosen material, based on a technique developed in 1979, has recently been re-established. Stainless steel 304 cylinders of length 160 mm, internal diameter 67 mm and thickness either 0.5 or 1.5 mm have been expanded using a 70 mm bore single-stage gas-gun. Microstructural analysis of the recovered specimens was performed using optical microscopy, revealing a combination of void formation and mechanical twinning that play a significant role in the plastic deformation process. Analysis of the fracture tips shows increased void density and necking in this region, and that failure occurred at 45 degrees to the cylinder radius. Based on this study, potential mechanisms for dynamic fracture during high strain loading on 304 stainless steel are suggested.
